Cronulla is a coastal suburb, and coastal suburbs have a specific exterior painting problem that most painting quotes don’t address upfront. The combination of salt air, ocean-facing humidity, and intense summer UV means that the products that perform fine in an inland Western Sydney suburb will fail in half the time here. We see it regularly: exterior paint on a 1970s brick veneer in Burraneer Road chalking out and peeling at the five-year mark because the previous painter used a standard exterior acrylic and skipped the wash-down prep. Before any exterior coat goes on in Cronulla, we high-pressure wash the surface to clear salt deposits, degrease with sugar soap where needed, and allow full dry time before priming. For substrates that face the ocean or the Bate Bay foreshore, we specify Dulux Weathershield or a marine-equivalent exterior product — coatings engineered for elevated salt and UV exposure. The price per litre is higher, but the performance difference over 10 years is significant.

The dominant housing type across Cronulla, Burraneer, and Gymea Bay is the 1960s–1980s brick veneer — solid, well-built homes that were never designed with coastal paint longevity in mind. Brick surfaces here are often painted over render, and render over brick is a particular failure point when salt moisture gets behind the film. We cut back any sections of lifting paint to a sound edge before applying new coats, rather than painting over delamination and leaving the problem for the next owner. There are also pockets of original fibro and weatherboard along the older beach-side streets near the Cronulla foreshore and around the Kingsway. Fibro requires sealing before topcoating — any unsealed fibro absorbs moisture through the cut edges, causing the paint to blister from the surface outward. We seal, prime, and topcoat in the correct sequence. On fibro in a coastal environment it’s not optional. For apartment buildings along Kingsway and the newer developments near Cronulla beach, strata common area repaints are a regular part of our work in the area. Salt staining on concrete balustrades and rendered facades is a cosmetic issue that becomes a structural one if moisture sits under peeling coatings for too long.
